The Quarrel
Games and Systems Thinking · Compulsory 1 · Team project
Two siblings, Mark and Ellen. Ellen gets bored and picks a fight, Mark hits back, and it escalates from there. Our question: how do the parents stepping in, and the way Mark responds, change how fast it blows up? We mapped it with causal loop diagrams for four scenarios and built one Stella simulation that runs all of them with graphs built in. The model went through six major versions, each one built on the last.
Our best fix was to stop the boredom before it starts (yes, the parents give Ellen an iPad) and to step in sooner. The fun part: even when Ellen's boredom hits zero, Mark's leftover anger can keep the loop going on its own.
